Abstract: The article constitutes a reading of “Se llamaba el País Vallecaucano” by considering (1) the author’s recent political and judicial experience; (2) the tradition of sociological essays about “sick nations”; (3) its contacts with 16th century chroniclers on the Cauca river valley; and (4) Colombia’s current crisis. It shows how in spite of being a history of the centuries old modus operandi of the Valle del Cauca’s elite, the essay sees the vindication of the territory on the social and political potencial of the dark-skinned lower classes.
