Sólo una luz de agua. Francisco de Asís y Giotto. Pablo Montoya

El título en sí le genera al lector una imagen desviante. ¿Se trata de un texto religioso dedicado a la figura de san Francisco de Asís? Para aclarar este asunto, diríamos que el libro bien podría titularse: “Solo una luz de agua: Francisco de Asís y otros personajes de Giotto”. Primero, porque el santo no es el protagonista central de estas 108 páginas en las que numerosas miradas y voces expresan “el lenguaje incomprensible de los muertos” (p. 12). También están los papas, fray Agustín, las monjas clarisas, la mujer resucitada de Benevento, Juan de Lérida, el hereje Pietro, entre otros. Segundo, porque si bien el tema religioso salta a la vista, hoy entendemos que Giotto, en caso de representar milagro alguno, lo hará como artista y no como devoto. El milagro corresponde, más que a Dios, a Giotto: cuando hacia finales del siglo XIII un peregrino cualquiera visitaba la Basílica Papal de San Francisco (en Asís, región de Umbría), lo hacía para presenciar la grandeza de Dios en tales muros. Montoya, en cambio, trastoca dicha lectura y legitima el valor del artista.
