Fernando Charry Lara and the reception of surrealism in Colombia

Abstract

This article studies the reception of Surrealism in Colombia taking Fernando Charry Lara as a representative case. Although previous studies have tried to establish the influence of the French movement on his poetical work, his reading of surrealism has not been sufficiently studied in his critical work. For this reason, the cultural field that served as a backdrop for the reception of avant-garde movements in Colombia is first reconstructed. Then, several articles of the author are analyzed chronologically, in order to reconstruct the particularities of this process. This analysis shows a change in his attitude not only towards the French movement, but also in his conception of poetry.

Author Biography

Janeth Alejandra García Herrera, National University of Colombia

Master of the research line of the Master in Literary Studies and Professional in Literary Studies of the National University of Colombia. He has served as a research and teaching assistant, and has extensive experience in organizing and searching bibliographic information on virtual platforms, online databases, and libraries. As a result of his experience in the field of research, he has participated as a speaker in several international events and has published a couple of texts in the journal of the Department of Literature of the National University of Colombia, Literatura: Teoría, historia, review. He participated in the organization of the XVI Andean Conference on Latin American Student Literature (Jalla-E), Written Cities: Invention and Transformations of Latin America in Literature, which was held at the National University of Colombia. She was a beneficiary of the Graduate Mobility Scholarship from the Network of Public Macrouniversities of Latin America to carry out an academic exchange with the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru. She has also worked as a copyeditor in Spanish and English. She has a command of the English language and a basic knowledge of French.
