This article analyzes the sense of uselessness in the novel Rebelión de los oficios inútiles (2014) by the Colombian author Daniel Ferreira, making use of the marginalist theory of William S. Jevons and his economic postulates. The study suggests a transversal interpretation based on the literary account of a humanity fractured by a socioeconomic order held by the premise of value-equal utility. The contribution of this reading is to trace echoes between recent events and the cultural discourse where poverty has been criminalized and it justifies the elimination of “useless” human subjects underscore in the way the experience of those who died in a continuous war without monuments.
