This article discusses the political and literary place of Helcías Martán Góngora in relation to Afro-Colombian critical thought. In this sense, it analyzes how he portrayed black/Afro-Colombian experiences in his poems and essays. The article sustains that his poems and essays reflect aspects of what is considered a committed intellectual. Based on his political action and literary production, the writer defended black/Afro-Colombian culture and its intelligentsia. His defense took place in a national anti-black/afrocolombian poetry, which make more valuable his works.
