This study sets out to map the distinct approximations that have been developed on first person narratives over the last sixty years. We shall employ the term «autobiography» in its broadest sense, and not as a specific genre. In this respect, we shall evidence how autobiographical narratives have been the focus of diverse fields of interest such as history, anthropology, and literature. The confrontation between the most relevant theories on the autobiographical genre leads us to conclude that the most controversial elements found in the disagreements established between these theories have their base on methodological questions that centre on questions of the form and function of these first person narratives.
