Abstract

Corín Tellado, in Spain, and Hedwig Courths-Mahler, in Germany, are the most successful female authors of their countries. Within completely different historical, social, and cultural contexts, they assumed and developed the popular form of the romance novel. In a first approach, we will ask for the space they and their oeuvre have occupied in the past and still occupy in the present. A second approach shall lead us to the —counterfactual— promises that the two authors offer to their readers by means of the romantic novel genre.

Author Biography

Hubert Pöppel, University of Regensburg

Studies of Romanistics, Theology, Philosophy and Sociology; PhD in Hispanic Literatures from the University of Bamberg with a work on Colombian poetry of the 1920s; second doctorate (habilitation) from the University of Jena with a study on the detective novel in Brazil. He was a professor and director of the Master in Colombian Literature at the University of Antioquia. He currently holds the position of academic coordinator of the Center for Hispanic Studies of the University of Regensburg.
