Bystander barriers to sexual harassment on the campus of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala

Bystander behavior in sexual harassment has been widely researched in English speaking countries. However, there is a paucity of research in Spanish-speaking countries. Here, we report the results of an online qualitative study investigating what prevents bystanders from providing help on the campuses of the University of San Carlos Guatemala.
Through an online questionnaire, qualitative data from 1,158 responses from students, teachers, and administrative staff were collected and analyzed. We examine the results in light of their implications for bystander interventions in the Guatemalan university context. In this sense, the participants identified obstacles linked to the degree of sensitivity of the spectator, the per
ception of risk regarding the situation, the lack of support from other spectators and the lack of
institutional support from the university. We will discuss the findings with reference to previous
studies in the Global North and the specific context of Guatemala.
