Abstract

This article analyzes the context of international relations since the end of the eighteenth century and the effect on the nature of independence movements in America, especially in the Portuguese and Spanish area. International conflicts were essential to understanding the independence and the decisive role they played in the political emancipation.

Author Biography

Anthony McFarlane, Universidad de Warwick

He completed his university studies at the London School of Economics, is a Doctor of History from the University of London, and is currently Professor in the Department of History at the University of Warwick in England. He has published studies on various aspects of the histories of Colombia and Ecuador, especially on issues of social history and political culture in the period of the Bourbon monarchy and the first republics. He has also published on the Anglo-American world in the British colonial period, and comparative studies on American independences. Among his works are The United Kingdom and America: The Colonial Era and Colombia before Independence: Economy, Society and Politics under Bourbon Dominion. He is a member of the Royal Historical Society in England, a corresponding member of the Colombian Academy of History, and a member of the editorial committees of various academic journals in Europe and Latin America.
