Approaching to the Concept of Legitimacy in Maquiavelo’s The Prince

Abstract

This paper attempts to address the concept of legitimacy in Maquiavelo’s The Prince. With this purpose it will be present an introduction to the philosophy of this Florentine thinker, through making remarkable how the concept of virtue is substantial in his political thought since this conception gathers the realistic, secular orientation of Maquiavelo’s political philosophy. From the concept of virtue in Maquiavelo, the hypothesis of the text is deduced: Maquiavelo pretends to offer legitimacy ways based on the virtue and charism of the monarch. Thus, initially it will be seek clarifying the concept of legitimacy. At that point, it will be an explanation about what Max Weber understands about legitimacy, based on his theory about the ideal types of domination. Finally, it will be make some considerations about how legitimacy operates in Maquiavelo based on some examples related to what was stated as concept of virtue in Maquiavelo
