Abstract

This paper aims to elucidate the Jacques Brunschwig's critiques about Aristotle's dialectic in Topics. The document uses Brunschwig's analysis on Aristotle's paradigmatic first phrase, where he aims to find a method in order to provide the reader an all-embracing ability to win any debate or discussion. In this way, this paper characterizes the Brunschwig's fearful Aristotle, who restricts dialectic to a controlled, academic environment, far away from an agonistic (agôn) one. It will highlight the restrictive rules for a dialectic debate in Topics, as foundation of Brunschwig's line of argument. And finally, it will criticize the posture of the commentator by confronting his argument with Topics I and Sophistical Refutations, in order to wield an argument that will shed light or give some sense to the paradigmatic first phrase of Topics.
