Abstract

Aims: To examine the effect of a short-duration, low-intensity walk on markers of oxidative stress in saliva of young women. Method: Eleven healthy women, age: 17.1 ± 0.24 years, participated voluntarily; they were evaluated 1 hour before and after a walk at an intensity between 110- 130 beats/min. Samples were taken after participants rinsed the mouth with water, the stimulated saliva samples were obtained, placed in test tubes and immediately stored at -5 ° C. Before performing the analyzes, the saliva samples were centrifuged at 3000 Rpm for 10 minutes. The concentration of lipid hydroperoxide was determined by the FOX method, uric acid using an enzymatic kit, total antioxidant activity (TAA) by the ABTS method, nitrite concentration by Griess reagent, and total proteins by colorimetry. Results: Immediately after walking, lipid hydroperoxide levels decreased significantly compared to values 1h before (p <0.001); as well TAA decreased immediately after exercise compared with values 1h before (p <0.001). Conclusion: physical exercise performed at low intensity and short duration reduces the concentration of lipid hydroperoxide as well as TAA in saliva of young women; the results seem to indicate that the practice at low intensity and short duration could be beneficial to modulate the risk of saturate the antioxidant system and generate oxidative stress.
