The pathos of language and the writings of psychotics. History of the signifier doctrine

Lacan’s interest in language and its pathos in psychosis goes back to his training as psychiatrist, driven by that mayor chapter of psychiatry that from the middle of the 19th century to the first third of the 20th century saw in language or though disorders a symptom of mental alienation, a guide for its diagnosis, clinical orientation that allowed to set out a semiology and some hypothesis about the mechanism at stake.
In four texts of Lacan, published between 1931 and 1947, we found the precedents of his postulate on the language phenomena in psychosis as they involve a subject caused by the signifier: “The subject’s exteriority relationship with the signifier is so captivating that all the clinicians somehow emphasized it.” (Lacan, 1997/1955-1956, p. 359).
