The fantasy and obsessional neurosis: an intricate relationship

As a crucial concept of Lacanian-oriented psychoanalytic theory, fantasy is an element of transcendental relevance to the understanding of neurosis. This paper aims to develop the fantasmatic particularity in obsessional neurosis through a theoretical review of Jacques Lacan's works between 1954 and 1960. Lacan outlines fantasy as a structural matrix intrinsic to the psyche, which reveals the particular relation of the subject with the object (a) that constitutes the cause of their unconscious desire. Grosso modo, fantasy can be conceptualized as a response to the enigma of the desire of the Other; hence, fantasy is the place where ethics is decided and where the function of the symptom in the treatment is established. Fantasy becomes the north in the direction of the treatment and can be approached through the interpretation since the analyst, by means of the transference's intertwining, is part of the fantasy.
