Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate cardiorespiratory fitness and the future cardio-metabolic risk, in women who were studying a teaching career; physical education or initial education. 255 women participated, with an age of 20.9 ± 3.1 years, pertaining to the physical education career (n = 163) and initial education (n = 92). In the first session, anthropometric tests (weight and height) were administered and in the second session, the aerobic test 20 meters shuttle run was applied. Differences were observed between careers being lower in the initial level students, 35.7 ± 5.0 versus 29.4 ± 3.7 mL·kg·min-1 (p > 0.001).  It was observed that the students had low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness on average. Regarding the cardiorespiratory fitness between races, it was observed that only 41 % of Initial Education Professorship students and 80 % of Physical Education Professorship students were classified with healthy cardiorespiratory endurance.
