This paper proposes a presentation of the most characteristic ideas in Miguel Antonio Caro's conception of aesthetics and literature. His arguments are presented showing how strongly infused by religious, moral and political elements they are hence distorting the nature, reality and dignity of the poetic work. In order to do this, the main aesthetic and literary subjects treated by the Colombian author are reviewed: the origins of poetry and the phenomenon of artistic creation, the criteria to define what is praiseworthy and what is reprehensible in poetry, the study of the classical models, the interpretation of the artistic ideal, and the relationship between science and poetry. Finally, the reasons to define Caro's position as one of the most powerful obstacles in the establishment of aesthetic modernity in Colombia are exposed
