Our aim with this article is to establish clearly what was what Gabriel García Márquez was looking for in L'Éducation sentimentale when he read it in 1983 as a preparation for his next novel, El amor en los tiemposdel cólera. That means, we will try to determine if that reading of one of Flaubert's main works had any kind of influence or effect in the final result of García Márquez's novel. In this sense we will focus on four specific aspects: Florentino Ariza's characterization, the title of the novel, the treatment of time and space, and the mixing of fiction and history.
