This article is intended to collate the text “Orika de los palenques” by Germán Espinosa (2007), taking into account the primary sources that mention the figure of maroons in the colonial period, the anthropologic findings on the issue and the characteristics of the historical narrative that can be traced in the story of the writer from Cartagena. The previous ideas are proposed in order to understand the impact that fiction and reality, as narrative concepts, have in the construction of this particular colonial phenomenon.
