Abstract

The present report intends to establish "logic" in the presentation and analysis of the deficient forms of government in the Republic VIH-IX. but not in sense of "historicism", from which it takes a clear and critical distance. With that purpose, it seeks to establish the place that presentation holds within the entirety of the work. Then it takes up the issue of criterion and the principle that enables to distinguish them from the ideal polis —the only one that constitutes a unit—. Furthermore, it orders them into a hierarchical order that manifests every time greater multiplicity until it establishes tyranny as the opposing end of the just and good polis. In contrast with recent publications (Blossner). the author sustains that Plato formulates and explicitly applies that criteria, even though, not precisely within the immediate context of the books VIII-IX.
