Abstract

Funeral homes are generators of residues similar to hospital remnants, which are named thanatopraxis in this paper. On this research, the management of infectious and chemical dangerous solid residues was analyzed, as well as the fulfillment of bio-safety standards, the vaccination coverage and the level of immunization against for hepatitis B in the staff of thanatopraxis laboratories of nine funeral homes in Medellín, during the second semester of 2001. It was evidenced that dangerous residues are manipulated
in those laboratories and they constitute potencial risk for the health of these workers. During the sampling an average of 34.68 corpses/day were treated, producing 888,7 g/corpse and 30.820 g/ day of dangerous solid residues. Handling of these residues is unknown in almost all the funeral homes. A total of 46 thanatologists were studied and 98% of them knew the biological risks which they are exposed to, but 60% of
them did not protect themselves adequately. In most of the funeral homes vaccination programs against hepatitis B in the staff were found incomplete and in none of the cases the seroconvertion leve l was measured. When the test was done it was found that 43.4% of thanatologists didn ́t have a satisfactory seroconvertion level according to their jobs.
