TRAVEL AND CHOROGRAPHY IN EUGENIO DIAZ CASTRO’S MANUELA (1858)

The aim of this paper is to analyze the theme of travel in Manuela of Eugenio Díaz Castro. We claim that the roman is inserted in the tradition of travel literature, and we think that it has much to do with the narratives of travelers and scientists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We assume that Manuela participate in the discoursive creation of the country. The starting point is that in Manuela appears a way to write and describe the landscape that can be related to the Chorographic Commission reports, written by Manuel Ancízar and published under the name Perigrinación de Alpha. Finally, we take into account some aspects that can be connected with the cultural metaphor representing the civilization / barbarism. This permits establishing a relation between the center and periphery with the purpose of discovering the social and economic contradictions on which the new nation was founded.
