In Manuela, Díaz Castro criticizes the patriarchal society and the double masculine morality related to women. In New Granada, prostitution was a social problem, but women did not have guarantees and equalities that men had. Intolerance and discrimination were degrading them, and in the regulations to control them, there was a double patriarchal morality and a legal manipulation on which it was based; but there were no explanations of the reasons that made women live that form of life or solutions for that situation.
