ABSTRACT: this paper presents the general guidelines of a theory about costumbrista detective fiction in Colombia based on Santiago Gamboa’s work Perder es cuestión de método (1997). It studies the ways in which the novel transforms the conventions of noir by articulating them with elements from a cuadro de costumbres. It claims that the cultural relevance of such a transformation lies in its contributions to a better understanding of the relationship between literary texts and the imaginary of crime in Colombia. It interprets the motif of loss in the work as a national allegory, and compares it with similar cases in Latin America. It analyzes the role of media and soccer in the novel, and suggests further lines of research in regard to other contemporary works.Downloads
