¿Qué distancia se debe tener con una tragedia nacional para narrarla con la obje-tividad que merece la historia, pero con el dolor que provoca el asesinato de un padre, el de la narradora? Este es el primer interrogante que uno podría plantearse al dar inicio a la lectura de Nuestras lágrimas saben a mar, un estremecedor testimonio personal y familiar de la escritora dominicana Sabrina Román (Santo Domingo, 1956). Se trata de una narración intimista donde los recuerdos personales trascien-den a lo colectivo, para posarse en la historia de las familias Román y Trujillo y de ahí en la historia de República Dominicana, dando nuevos elementos para leer los acontecimientos que rondaron la caída del dictador Rafael Leonidas Trujillo en 1961, cuyo régimen es hoy reconocido como uno de los más sanguinarios y crueles que existieron en América Latina en el siglo XX. Durante los años que Trujillo estuvo en el poder, entre 1930 y 1961, se produjeron más de 50.000 asesinatos, de los cuales se calcula que 20.000 fueron de haitianos, como parte de una política xenófoba del dictador contra esta población.
