In Praise of Pause: Ma and Japanese Haiku

pause, haiku, Japanese aesthetics, ma, Natsume SôsekiAbstract
The paper approaches Japanese aesthetics from the theoretical formulations of Roland Barthes, around haiku and pause. To this end, it develops certain notions of the French thinker to operationalize and explain what is currently understood by aesthetics (bigaku) in Japan. Then, the work delves into one of the values of Japanese aesthetics: the ma, understood as «interval» or «in-between». This theoretical development is accompanied by some haikus by Natsume Sôseki. In that sense, this work contributes to the field of Western literary studies on Japanese poetry.
