Elements, simple substances and atoms: three problematic concepts in meaningful teaching and learning of chemical concepts

The concept chemical element as integrant of the trilogy atom and simple substance, tried from an epistemological perspective from ancient sensorial and rational Greek philosophy, to the empiric, rational and super rational scientific progress, allows to differentiate it as an abstract reality and not as a phenomenological entity attributed to the simple substance. It also allows to enquire about the ideas that students of first university level have in regards to such concept.
