Abstract

The writer and art critic Marta Traba arrived in Colombia in 1954. From that year until 1969, she carried out her intellectual work in this country and became the most fierce and constant defender of modern art and artists; In this field of action, she carried out very diverse tasks - in addition to art criticism - such as a guide to the National Museum, university professor, cultural promoter, curator of exhibitions, founder and director of the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá. His critical contributions to Colombian art continued until the moment of his death, in 1983. This text briefly examines Marta Traba's ideas related to Latin American art and the way in which Colombian art was inserted in this cultural context. Likewise, it refers to the concepts that served Argentine critics to define and characterize Colombian art in general, and the work of the main modern artists, in particular.

Alba Cecilia Gutiérrez Gómez, University of Antioquia 

Master of Arts from the National University of Colombia, Medellín campus and Master of Philosophy from the University of Antioquia. Teacher of complex time of the Faculty of Arts. Member of the Research Group on Theories and History of Art in Colombia and director of the Research Group on Cultural Management at the same university. Among his publications are: The artist in front of the world. Mimesis in the plastic arts (Universidad de Antioquia, 2008). Vásquez Ceballos and art criticism in Colombia (Universidad de Antioquia, 2008, co-authored with Armando Montoya I.) and Aesthetics of Modernity and Plastic Arts in Antioquia (Universidad de Antioquia, 2001, co-authored with Sofía Arango R.)
