Coach-athlete Relationship and Perception of Team Cohesion in Young Brazilian Sportsmen

This cross-sectional study analyzed the perception of team cohesion and the quality of coach-athlete relationship among 301 Brazilian student-athletes, aged between 14 and 17, who competed in the final phase of the 2016 Pernambuco school games. Data were collected using group environment and coach-athlete relationship questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Mann-Whitney tests (p<0.05). Results showed that both boys and girls scored high on team cohesion, although boys scored higher score on the Group Integration-Task (p<0.05), as well as on all dimensions of coach-athlete relationship (p<0.05). Futsal and volleyball athletes standout for scoring lower or higher on specific variables compared to other sports. In conclusion, the quality of the coach-athlete relationship may be a factor involved in the perception of group cohesion in school sport.
