Abstract

The National Curriculum for Basic Education of Peru highlights the benefits of Physical Education for the integral development of students. Specifically, it seeks that students display a healthy lifestyle and their efficient use of motor skills. Despite the regulation emphasizes quality Physical Education, this curricular area has been generally overlooked.  In this qualitative study, 24 fourth-year secondary school students from two educational institutions in Lima (regular and emblematic) were interviewed to explore their perspectives regarding Physical Education. Additionally, two educational authorities and three Physical Education teachers were also interviewed. The results suggest that the course is associated with diverse personal and social benefits such as well-being, health, coexistence, and socialization. The potential of interpersonal conflicts arising during classes as important learning opportunities is also visible, as well as the crucial role of the Physical Education teacher.
