This article locates J. Zalamea’s work inside of the historical and intellectual tradition of Colombia. It emphasizes, mainly, the role that the author plays in constructing democratic ideals and a critical sense of national culture in all its political, literary, and artistic scopes. In addition, it analyzes the intellectual function of the author in a Spanish American perspective as someone who continues the intellectual legacy of the xix century Spanish Americans represented by: Domingo Faustino Sarmiento in Argentina or González Prada in Peru, whose cultural legacies of Spain in Spanish America were subjects of analysis.
