This article proposes a reading of the presence of spirit and religiosity of African-descendet origin in the colonial Cartagena in the novel Los cortejos del diablo by Germán Espinosa. This paper attempts to show that the African cultural ancestry represents in this historical novel the destabilizing factor of the colonial order and the utopian promise of freedom lost and to be recovered.
