This article presents a personal view into the life of the Colombian-Canadian author Yvonne América Truque, based on two interviews with the author carried out in 1993 and 1999. It is also a posthumous tribute to this great Afro-Hispanic author. The interviews allow a better understanding of Truque's life and courage from her birth in Colombia to her exile in Canada. Her voice is strong against socio-political and racial problems in both countries where she lived. This article follows a structure based on the author's life according to her struggles, work and social and political denouncements through her own words. It was a life strongly determined by her Afro-Hispanic inheritance and by her spirit of justice and protest under the influence of her father, the Colombian poet Carlos A. Truque. A biographical information is approached, then accompanied by a critical analysis of her works and my personal opinions. An emphasis is placed on the time in which the interviews were made, a time of national crisis in Colombia with economic, political and social problems additionally framed in the context of drug traffic and cartels, violence, and the participation of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc). Truque's voice becomes strong and resonantwhen denouncing socio-political problems of both countries.
