This paper inquires about the current pertinence of Marxian studies particularly in Colombia, and about their philosophical perspective. The essay is developed in three parts: the first one examines the academic and cultural reasons to reread Marx. The second one establishes F. Engel's paternity regarding Marxism and the concepts of dialectical and histone materialism. The third part points out Marxi philosophical evolution and the breaking-off between two moments of his thought: philosophic materialism and the NEW MATERIALISM. The latter establishes the distance in nomenclature and conception from the traditional concepts of historic and dialectical materialism. It opens to a negative conception of philosophy in Marx, not exempt of philosophical assumptions that should be made explicit.
