The transversal reason: the position of Wolfgang Welsch in the struggle between modernism and postmodernism

The first part of this paper depicts the debate hold in the decade of 1980 between German and French philosopher about Modernism and Postmodernism. Special emphasis is placed on the contributions made to it by both Jurgen Habermas and Jean- Franfois Lyotard. In the second half of the article, the thesis of Wolfgang Welsch is presented, who in 1987 started redefining the concept of reason (Vernunft) in order to overcome the confrontation arised by the debate, and proposed a new theory ofreason —the transversal one.
