En la enfermedad de Alzheimer se acumulan péptidos tóxicos que irrumpen la homeostasis del ambiente del parenquima cerebral. Estos péptidos son el producto de la alteración de vías metabólicas, transporte y degradación que conllevan a la toxicidad progresiva. Hasta ahora, el control sobre la acumulación de dichos peptidos no ha resuelto el problema clínico.
Los lípidos son señales moleculares que gobiernan las funciones celulares, y varios de los eventos de procesamiento y degradación de proteínas depende de la composición y conformación de membranas y el diálogo con el balance energético. Por dicha razón, la investigación del laboratorio se basa en desentrañar la relación entre los fosfolípidos y procesos proinflamatorios tempranos régidos desde los componentes de la Unidad Neurovascular como posible etiopatogénesis del trastorno cognitivo y demencia.
