Abstract

A review on medical diagnostic systems based on computer programs (Medical Expert Systems-MES) as an application of artificial intelligence is presented. It includes a historical account, general notions, internal architecture of Expert Systems, subjects who interact with them during their development and application, as well as advantages and disadvantages. PULMONOLOGIST, a MES for differential diagnosis of pulmonary diseases, is presented as an example of the potential of this technology.
