Abstract

Introduction: Dengue infection is a disease of interest in public health, hence guidelines have been proposed for its approach. However, there are few reviews in literature that describe those recommendations in the older adult population, who suffers an increasing prevalence and high burden of morbidity and mortality associated with severe forms of dengue, which could be explained by the process of immunosenescence and comorbidities, in addition to a different clinical profile that makes timely recognition and intervention difficult.

Objectives: To highlight the importance of studying and identifying this disease in the elderly and its differences with the presentation and evolution in the young adult population.

Methods: A narrative review was carried out based on the evidence of scientific literature on the approach to dengue in the elderly.

Results: Dengue in the elderly is a prevalent condition with a high burden of morbidity and mortality that may have different clinical manifestations than those in the young population.

Conclusions: The comprehensive approach to dengue in the elderly should be carried out by applying a comprehensive geriatric assessment, including the evaluation of frailty, a tool that establishes a prognosis and defines appropriate therapeutic objectives for each patient.
