Abstract

Although classification in medicine is a proven tool useful in the understanding and management of illnesses since antiquity, nowadays there is a tendency to overestimate its role in diagnosis and treatment. The author considers that aspects such as cultural, philosophical, and medical reasons should be appraised from a local perspective to avoid the very common mistake of practicing a medicine based on factors that are only functional when applied in the locality of origin.
