Abstract

Worldwide, tracheal transplantation is a novel procedure; it poses very complex challenges that must be assumed by an interdisciplinary group in order to obtain optimal results. Because of their specialized knowledge, anesthesiologists must be actively involved in every step of the management of patients undergoing such transplantation, namely: planning, intraoperative and intensive care and hospitalization after the latter. A general overview of anesthesiologists’ role is presented based on the experience of 11 tracheal transplantations in Medellín, Colombia.
