In this article we analyse Roberto Bolaño’s novel Los detectives salvajes, based on the exiled condition of its main characters. We trace Bolaño’s ethical and aesthetical responses to this exile, taking into account Zygmunt Bauman’s theories, and we observe how in the novel Bolaño goes beyond the cynicism, hedonism or nihilism that could emerge when the utopias aimed to achieve the social change vanish.
