Abstract

The current proposal of García Márquez’s short story «Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes» analyzes a monster’s image as a mutation of the representation of the fantastic. Given that the so-called angel falls short of the expectations of people thirsty for miracles, it is not intended to play any negative or positive role. It simply limits itself to appearing, or showing up, strictly in accordance with the monster’s etymology. This way, the initial effects make people realize both a character’s degradation and more so the entire population’s degradation.

Author Biography

Carolina Sanabria, University of Costa Rica

Doctor in Audiovisual Communication and Advertising from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She is currently a Full Professor at the University of Costa Rica. Apart from specialized articles in the field of communication and literature in national and foreign magazines, he has published the books Bigas Luna. The voracious eye (2010), Contemplation of the intimate. The audiovisual in contemporary culture (2011) and Literary adaptations. Three Hitchcock Masterpieces (2013). Member of the Institute for Research in Art, University of Costa Rica, and the Research Group Hermes, Technology, Knowledge and Intelligence Architecture, Autonomous University of Barcelona.
