Evolución de osteotomías mandibulares para el tratamiento del prognatismo y retrognatismo

Se traza como objetivo hacer un breve recuento histórico sobre la evolución de los procedimientos quirúrgicos destinados al tratamiento del prognatismo y retrognatismo. Factores importantes tales como: la selección del sitio anatómico, instrumental requerido, características del diseño de la osteotomía de acuerdo con el objetivo quirúrgico, tipo de abordaje y el método de contención de los fragmentos o de fijación intermaxilar han sido considerados y evaluados a través del tiempo por los pioneros de la cirugía maxilofacial en su comienzo y luego por suscesores para proponer alternativas quirúrgicas que han sido continuamente refinadas, hasta disponer hoy en día, de aquellos que se caracterizan por su versatilidad, raídez, no requieren de mucha disección de tejeidos, ofrecen mayor estabilidad en los resultados y menor morbilidad.
