El bazo es una víscera impar localizada en la cavidad abdominal por debajo del hipocontrio izquierdo; su peso en una persona adulta oscila entre 90 y 129 gramos. Embriológicamente aparece desde que el producto de la concepción mide 10 milímetros, y hasta finales del segundo trimestre de la gestación contribuye grandemente a la formación de glóbulos rojos y de glóbulos blancos. En Condiciones normales desde finales del segundo trimestre de la gestación la médula ósea asume funciones de hemato y leucopoyesis.
