The offspring of the barbacha. Organizational process of Awá indigenous women in Nariño, Colombia and their bets against the approach of gender violence

Abstract

The daily life of the indigenous women of the Awá people has been marked by multiple obstacles to the effective
enjoyment of their rights, due to the overlapping of factors associated with sexism, racism and impoverishment,
in addition to the enormous structural inequalities and the consequences of a war conflagration that has raged
in its territory for decades.
For some decades now, Awá women, organized through the Counseling of Women and Family, have developed
a series of proposals to process the various situations of abuse they experience. This article reflects on the
impact that the political demands of women intend to have on the way in which conflicts associated with
gender violence are processed, which allows us to account for the dual nature of the right, which although
it has contributed to create subalternized roles and categories, it also embodies a tool that allows the
rearrangement of relationships in a certain community, based on the claims and demands of social actors,
in this case, indigenous women.
