Para entender el sentido histórico de la autonomía universitaria, es preciso recapitular los orígenes helenístico, romano y cristiano de nuestra civilización occidental.
Grecia, además de su filosofía y sus artes, aportó un sentido de la política, del derecho y de la cultura social. Y Roma, vencedora de Grecia por las armas pero vencida por la luz del pensamiento griego, llegó a ser el centro de la cristiandad.
