BIBLIOTECA PÚBLICA: DESCRIPCIÓN DE UNA PROPUESTA METODOLÓGICA PARA LA CONSTRUCCIÓN DE SU HISTORIA

Resumen

El artículo presenta un panorama general de la investigación “Historia y desarrollo de la biblioteca pública en Medellín”, con énfasis en la propuesta metodológica empleada en dicha investigación. Propuesta que permitió reconstruir la historia de la biblioteca pública, tanto desde el transcurrir de los hechos sociales, como desde el conocimiento que las personas tienen de esos hechos, de los actores, sus acciones y las relaciones establecidas entre ellos, la biblioteca pública y la sociedad.

Plantea, además, la necesidad de realizar trabajos investigativos que contribuyan a esclarecer y entender la biblioteca pública, de un lado, desde sus coyunturas, crisis, continuidades, tendencias y perspectivas en relación con los hechos que, desde otras sociedades y culturas la impulsaron y que hoy la identifican como institución social, y de otro, desde los diversos estudios dirigidos a conocer e interpretar procesos, lógicas, hechos, actores y aspectos históricos que han caracterizado a la biblioteca pública.

Abstract

This article presents a general overview of the research project, “History and Development of the Public Library in Medellín,” with emphasis on the methodological proposal employed in this research. This approach made it possible to reconstruct the history of the public library both through social events and the knowledge that individuals have of those events—the players, their actions, and the relationship between the public library and society. This article also stresses the necessity of undertaking research projects that illuminate and help understand the public library from two points of view: (1) its turning points, its crises, its continuity, its trends, and its outlook as they relate to events that, from the point of view of other societies, drive it and identify it as a social institution; and (2) other studies designed to help understand and interpret the processes, reasoning, actions, players, and historical perspectives that have characterized the public library.
