From a qualitative focus with the comprehensive case-study strategic methodology (leading discourses) and the conceptual bases of the social education using the qualitative techniques (participant observant interview) the contribution of the public library for the citizenship formation process is analyzed from the coexistence, participation and autonomy points of view. There are citizens’ practices stemming from interactions, relationships and actions in public libraries acknowledging the new meanings and functions of this institution in the 21st century within a democracy-searching society recognizing information and knowledge as essential categories for the exercise of citizenship and the base to achieve transformations of the subject and the social reality.
