The extracts of Acacia farnesiana, Piper arieianum, P. subpedale, Sphagnum recurvum, and Vismia baccifera subsp. ferruginea were evaluated in vitro against promastigotes of Leishmania spp. and amastigotes of Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis and epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi. Extracts of V. baccifera subsp. ferruginea and P. arieianum were promising due to low cytotoxicity against the U937 cell line and good leishmanicidal activity. Because of the good leishmanicidal activity of the subspecies V. baccifera subsp. ferruginea, was studied the possibility to get by tissue culture propagation of this plant. A cinnamic acid derivative was isolated too, but only showed a marginal antiprotozoal activity.
