Resumen

Campos-Macaé Channel was the largest engineering project of the Empire of Brazil:a waterway for the transit of people and for the transportation of sugar production in 19th Century. This hydraulic heritage spans four cities of Northern Rio de Janeiro - RJ. Currently, its navigability became precarious in some cities because of the government ́s indifference to implement public policies that promote new uses, allowing its preservation. In Quissamã city, the conservation of the Campos-Macaé Channel contributed to new uses, especially for tourism. For the basis of this study, we use documentary and bibliographic sources as well as interviews.
