Information and knowledge in Relational Quantum Mechanics

Abstract

The relational interpretation of quantum mechanics (RQM) has generated intense philosophical debate, particularly regarding its distinctive conception of knowledge. This paper examines how RQM articulates that conception through the notion of “information.” I begin by analyzing Carlo Rovelli’s view of scientific knowledge, followed by a reconstruction of the main argument supporting RQM. I then critically assess how the theory connects information and knowledge to present a realist, naturalist, and relational account of science. I argue that, in its current form, RQM fails to offer a coherent epistemological framework. Moreover, recent attempts by its advocates to resolve these issues expose deep philosophical tensions at the core of the interpretation, indicating the need for substantial theoretical revisions.

Author Biography

Juan Vila, UBA-UNTREF-CONICET

Juan Vila holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Buenos Aires, a Master's degree in Musical Creation, New Technologies, and Traditional Arts (IUNTREF), and a Diploma in Argentine Art – Folklore (UNSAM). He has specialized in areas such as phenomenology, philosophy of science, and environmental thought. He is a postdoctoral fellow at CONICET (Argentina), teaches philosophy and arts at UNTREF, and is the author of several philosophical articles published in national and international books and specialized journals. He is also the author of a book: The Paradox of Rationality (Teseo Press, 2015). For his work on the concept of the biological organism in Martin Heidegger, he was awarded the “Ted Kisiel Junior Scholar Award 2023” by the Heidegger Circle of North America in New York (2024).
